Chapter Five

Back in town, Isaac received a call. Recognizing the number, Isaac killed the engine by the side of the road. Oren gave him a quizzical look.

“Pack business,” Isaac mouthed, about to answer the call.

Oren nodded, tucking himself against the seat. For a moment, Isaac was tempted to hold off the call and comfort Oren instead. Talking things out seemed like the best solution, except he knew how much conflicted Oren was. Oren knew how he hurt, too. Selfish bastard that he was, Isaac hoped they could finally take this step forward, but it was asking too much. Oren was married to Terrence for ten years.

Isaac missed his best friend, but he was pissed at Terrence, too, for landing Oren into this mess. If he hadn’t gone to gangsters to pay off his debts, Terrence would still be alive. Alive and Oren would have reason to come to Darkfall, seeking him. Christ. Isaac was fucked up.

He knew Oren was shaken by his words, but Isaac meant them. It hurt too much, to be in second place in Oren’s heart. Answering the phone, Isaac put it to his ear. “What’s up, Jared?”

For some reason, Oren’s face screwed up at the mention of Jared’s name.

“Hate to disturb you, Isaac, knowing what you have planned. A fight broke out in Hailey’s bar between two lone shifters—a tourist and a local. Everyone’s busy at the moment, and I’m with Alessio and Jane, about to meet our allies in Oak Creek.”

“I’ll handle it,” Isaac said, glancing at Oren. They wouldn’t be going anywhere soon, and he’d been spending way too much time dodging from his responsibilities.

Silence on the other end. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m on it.”

Jared let out a sigh of relief. “Good. I’ll let Dino and Raul know. They’re with Michella, meeting up with the weretiger clan.”

As Jared cut the connection, Isaac realized he should be in the loop. A good pack enforcer knew everything that happened in their pack, but Michella encouraged him to take the time off and focus on helping Oren.

“Oren, did you hear all that?” Isaac asked. At his nod, Isaac continued, “I’ll drop you off at the apartment then deal with this.”

“No need for that. Take me with you. I won’t get in your way. I want to see you work.”

Frowning, Isaac thought about that for a bit. Oren wouldn’t be able to handle himself in a fight, but he couldn’t waste time either. “Promise me you’ll keep out of the way.”

At Oren’s glare, Isaac sighed. “Look, when shifters get drunk and fight it out, it gets messy. I want us both home in one piece.”

“I promise,” Oren reassured him.

“Hailey and Bob Hobbs are members of the pack. They run the Wolf Run bar. Usually, there’s no trouble, but fights occasionally break out,” Isaac explained, reaching the destination in fifteen minutes. He stepped out, feeling Oren follow behind him. “Remember—”

“You don’t need to remind me,” Oren muttered. Isaac brought him close for a kiss, liking how Oren’s expression became soft each time Isaac took his lips.
